How to make your own playdough

If you’ve got kids, then you’ll know how much they love playdough. The colourful, squishy texture just calls out to be played with and moulded into whatever creation is lurking in your child’s imagination.

However, the problem with shop-bought playdough is that it’s quite expensive for what it is. Pair that with the fact that it will undoubtedly go missing at some point, and replacing those little tubs of creative joy can turn out to be a pretty costly affair.

So, why not try making your own instead? It’s really easy, super cheap, and not only will you have loads of fun choosing what colours to make, but you’ll also be helping the environment by reducing the amount of plastic packaging you bring into the house. As if that wasn’t enough, you’ll keep your littleun’s entertained not just with the finished product, but they’ll also love getting involved with the process of making it. Double pay off!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 130g plain flour
  • 35g salt
  • 120ml warm water
  • 5 drops of natural food colouring (of your choice)

And here’s how to make it:

  • Take a bowl and mix together the flour and the salt
  • In a separate bowl, mix together the warm water and 5 drops of food colouring
  • Slowly and carefully, pour the now coloured water into the flour mixture, stirring as you go until everything is combined, then knead with your hands until the flour is completely absorbed. If the dough seems a little bit sticky, add some more flour until it doesn’t stick at all.
  • Repeat this process to make as many different colours as you like.

And that’s it. It really is that easy!

When the time comes to tidy up after a fun-filled day of creating, simply pop the playdough into an airtight container, mason jar with lid, recycled ice cream tub or even a freezer bag. Storing in this way means that your playdough should last for several months without drying out.

So, next time you’re stuck inside on a rainy day and need something to entertain the kids, get them to help you make some playdough and watch as they create their masterpieces!
